5 Proven Home Remedies to Treat Asthma

Asthma is a disease of the lungs that causes problematic breathing. It can be either chronic or acute. Generally, asthma occurs in case of obstruction in the flow of air in the lungs. Although the exact cause of this disease is not known, it is usually triggered by air pollution, allergies, emotions, respiratory infections, weather conditions, and specific medications. The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Home Remedies to Treat Asthma

There are numerous medical treatments available to treat asthma. However, you can also get relief from asthma with the help of following home remedies.

1. Garlic

Here is a garlic remedy that helps to clear congestion from the lungs during the early stages of the disease. Just boil 2-3 cloves in a quarter cup of cup of milk. Let it cool at room temperature. Drink for desired results.

2. Figs

Figs contain nutritional properties to enhance respiratory health, in addition, it also helps to remove phlegm and reduce breathing difficulties. Wash two-three dried figs and soak them overnight in a cup of water. Eat the soaked figs on empty stomach the next morning.

3. Ginger

 

Ginger is a highly popular natural treatment for numerous health problems, asthma being one of them. It has also been found through research that ginger helps to reduce airway inflammation thus inhibiting airway contraction. Moreover, studies also reveal that ginger contains compounds that help to enhance the muscle relaxant effects of specific asthma drugs.

To use, mix equal quantities of ginger juice, honey, and pomegranate juice. Consume one tablespoon of this mixture 2-3 times a day. Another way to use ginger as a remedy for asthma is to mix a teaspoon of ground ginger on one and a half cup of water and take a tablespoon of this mixture before bedtime.

Alternatively, you can also use it by cutting an inch of ginger into small pieces and adding it to a pot of boiling water. Allow it to steep for about an hour. Let cool and then drink it. Yet another method to use ginger as a remedy for asthma is by preparing a fenugreek decoction to detoxify your lungs. Boil one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water and add one teaspoon each of honey and ginger juice to it. Drink this solution twice daily to get relief from asthma symptoms. You can also consume raw ginger with salt added to it.

4. Onions

Onions contain anti-inflammatory properties. These properties help to relieve the constriction of the airways during asthma. Moreover, the content of sulfur reduces the inflammation in lungs. Just try to include raw onions as a part of your daily meals. You can add them to salads. However, if you don’t like the taste of raw onions, you can eat cooked onions.

5. Honey

Honey is probably the most conventional and oldest treatment option for asthma. The ethereal oils and alcohol contained by honey help to reduce the symptoms of asthma. Just inhaling the smell of honey can provide positive results for some people.  Alternatively, you can also mix a teaspoon of honey to a glass if hot water and drink it slowly about three times a day. Yet another option is to swallow a teaspoon of honey with ½ a teaspoon of cinnamon powder. This would remove the phlegm from the throat thus providing better sleep.

Although these remedies are quite effective and give positive results, it is recommended that you consult a doctor at the earliest if you observe any increase in breathing difficulties. Also, make it  appoint to stay away from allergic foods and avoid going out in dust to prevent the symptoms from alleviating.
